More FAQ

Construction might be almost complete, but the FAQ continues to update! Here are the latest posts.

What is a scoring line?
A scoring line is the line in a sidewalk that divides it into sections. When you walk down a sidewalk and walk past the line that cuts it into two rectanles then you have just walked by a scoring line.

What is the problem with the scoring lines on the project?
It appears that, unfortunately, some of the scoring lines/patterns on the project were improperely installed. To the un-trained eye, there appears to be no problem with the sidewalks. However, to those familiar with construction and with the plans in hand there is a problem as some of the scoring patterns are off and do not provide the intended look for Main Street.

Where are these scoring line problems?
The project engineers and contractors must still formally walk to site and mark out the affected areas. MSP advisory committee members have pointed out scoring line issues by the bank plaza, in front of the Village Hall, and on the north side of the bridge.

Is it safe to walk on the sidewalks?
YES!
The scoring line problems are purely aesthetic and do not affect the safety/integrity of the new sidewalks.

How will these problems be fixed?
No formal timetable/solution has been created as of yet. The engineers and contractors will walk the site and mark out where the lines are supposed to be. This will then allow them, the Village, and the MSP to compare how far off the existing scoring lines are to the proposed ones. Economy has promised to fix any sidewalks that the MSP/Village wants fixed, but believes it might have to wait till next spring/summer.

First let me say what a great inmBeforeprovement to the Village!!! I do have a comment to make regarding exiting from Union onto Main St.

Before MSP, one had to nose their way out into Main St. just to see around NAPA to the left. Cars coming from the East would invariably go behind wanting to park in front of the bank or carry on up old Main St.

Alas one now needs to pull out to see around the Vans, and cars parked in front of the bank - these are blocking the view of cars coming from West Main.

Why was there not a more defined parking zone infront of the bank?

Thanks for your time

Hi Sally,

Thanks for leaving your comments here on the blog.

I have forwarded your concerns to the MSP design sub-committee who played a significant role in helping Beardsley Design Associates and C & S Engineers design the plans. As soon as I get a formal response from them I will post it up here in the comments section.

Yes, the nosing out in front of NAPA was one of the reasons the MSP decided to bring out the curbline in front of the bank. As the new curb is just like any existing curb, the vans parked there are in perfectly legal spots. From the design point of view there was no need to better define the parking in front of the bank as it is regular street parking, just somewhere new. However, it now appears that they too block a driver's view as you reported.

I must admit that I was not with the MSP during the design process. Hence, I can not really say if the designers had thought of your concern while drafting the plan. I find no record of it in the office's files and that is why I forwarded your comment to them. The MSP hopes to continue enhacing Main Street for years to come and to complete those sections of the plan that could not be done during this phase. Maybe in a later construction phase something can be done to alleviate the issue you mentioned. I hope this helps. Please keep checking out the blog for the upcoming response from the MSP design committee. You can also contact the office directly. Thanks!

Hi Sally,

I just heard back from John Ullberg, one of the members of the MSP design sub-committee and also of the primary MSP Advisory Committee.

It appears that some other citizens have brought these concerns directly to individual members of the MSP. The committee has promised to look into this as it appears they did not foresee the issue.

As part of the New York State Department of Transportation work happening on Main Street next summer, they will be striping out parking spaces along Main Street. This will then indicate where exactly one is allowed to park along all the curbs, including by the bank.
